Retinol (Vitamin A) is one of the most comprehensively investigated ingredients within the personal care industry, with proven efficacy during clinical assessment for the improvement of fine lines and wrinkles, increased collagen and elastin production1,2, reduced hyperpigmentation and photo-damage3. However, formulation success is often hindered by the stability of retinol (as a result of light and/or air induced decomposition) and formulations are limited to mainly oily, non-aqueous formats due to poor water solubility.

Lipodisq® particles mimic the carrier ability of natural HDL lipoproteins "good cholesterol" by encapsulating hydrophobic active agents, such as retinol, within the central phospholipid bilayer of its discoidal structure.

Lipodisq® particles are water soluble with an average diameter of 11-40nm. Lipodisq® parti- cles are ideal vehicles for skincare delivery, facilitating rapid skin absorption from aqueous gels, serums, O/W creams and patch/mask technologies.
The small size of Lipodisq® particles enables them to penetrate the upper layer of the epidermis, the stratum corneum, while their oily hydrophobic core enables a high loading capacity for oil soluble agents, consequently they have a far greater potential for delivering significant amounts of active agents, as compared to much larger particle systems such as liposomes/niosomes.
